BLOOD PRESSURE
Blood pressure is essentially a measure of the “push” of your blood against the walls of your arteries. It’s a vital sign that tells us how hard your heart is working and how healthy your blood vessels are. The Two Numbers: Systolic vs. Diastolic 🔢 When you get a reading, like 120/80 mmHg, it’s always given as two numbers:
Systolic (Top Number):
This is the pressure when your heart beats (contracts). It represents the “surge” of blood being pumped out into your body. 💓
Diastolic (Bottom Number):
This is the pressure when your heart rests between beats. It’s the “baseline” pressure that remains in your pipes while the heart refills with blood. ⏸️ How It Works: The “Garden Hose” Analogy 🚿 Think of your circulatory system like a garden hose. The pressure inside depends on two main things:
The Pump:
How much “water” (blood) the heart pumps out.
The Resistance:
How narrow or stiff the “hose” (artery) is. If you put your thumb over the end of a hose, the water comes out with more force because you’ve created resistance. Similarly, if your arteries become narrow or stiff (due to things like salt, stress, or age), your heart has to pump much harder to get the blood through, which raises your blood pressure.
